A Treatise on Arkhé, Its Conditioned States, and the Nature of Living Casters
I. On Arkhé, the Ground Field
This volume serves as the foundational text for those seeking to understand the mechanics of the Aether. To understand the light, one must first understand the silence that precedes it.
Arkhé is existence before behaviour rather than magic in itself. All that exists does so because Arkhé permits persistence. It is the lowest energetic state of reality: perfectly symmetric, non-directional, and indifferent to form. In isolation, Arkhé does nothing — it neither builds nor destroys — yet all structures ultimately relax back into it. This is why scholars call Arkhé "Stillness".
Life cannot operate within pure Arkhé. Biological systems require gradients: charge differences, thermal imbalance, directional flow, asymmetry. Arkhé eliminates these conditions by restoring equilibrium. Thus, when unconditioned Arkhé enters a living system, life does not “burn away” — it ceases to function, as all processes lose their motive force.
II. Phos and Skotos: Conditioned Motion
Phos and Skotos are not separate energies but rather, they are conditioned states of Arkhé. When Arkhé is constrained — given direction, asymmetry, and bias — it becomes usable by life.
This conditioning produces two stable modes: Phos: Arkhé constrained toward cohesion, repair, growth, and persistence. Skotos: Arkhé constrained toward separation, decay, expenditure, and entropy. Together they are called "Motion", because they reintroduce the imbalance life requires. Neither Phos nor Skotos is inherently moral. They are structural tendencies imposed upon an otherwise indifferent field.
How conditioned Arkhé becomes an element
Elements are not substances created by Aether — they are phase transitions enforced upon existing matter. When Arkhé is conditioned into Motion (Phos or Skotos), it creates a field of directional pressure. Depending on the intensity and precision of that field, the atoms within it are forced to alter their fundamental behaviour.
An element is the observable byproduct of atomic structure responding to that pressure. Phos-dominant fields increase binding energy between atoms, forcing them into more ordered, rigid configurations — gases becoming liquids, liquids becoming solids, damaged tissue becoming whole. Skotos-dominant fields decrease binding energy, forcing molecular bonds to release their stored energy outward as heat, kinetic force, or electrical discharge.
A caster does not make fire. They force the bonds of surrounding molecules to release their stored energy until the air ignites.
Not all elements require the same resolution of control. Primary elements operate at the bulk molecular level — large numbers of atoms behaving collectively, tolerating approximation. Secondary elements require the caster to target specific atomic substructure: individual electron orbitals, exact crystalline geometry. Extreme elements push further still, operating at the boundary of what conditioned Aether can sustain before collapsing back into Arkhé.
Element Definitions
Fire: Rapid oxidation — molecular bonds breaking and releasing thermal energy. Forces bonds to release stored energy until cascading combustion occurs.
Water: Liquid H₂O — hydrogen bonds loose enough for fluid flow. Baseline ambient state; requires minimal directional pressure to guide.
Wind: Pressure differential — kinetic energy of gas molecules moving directionally. Expends energy unevenly across a field to create a pressure gradient.
Earth: Mineral lattices — silicate and oxide bonds in rigid crystalline arrangements. Compresses and locks mineral bonds into highly ordered, static structures.
Ice: H₂O locked into hexagonal crystalline lattice. Forces molecules into precise bond angles. Approximations produce unstable slush.
Lightning: Electrical discharge — electrons stripped from atoms and cascading. Targets specific electron orbitals rather than molecular bonds to create ionisation.
Light: Stimulated emission — electrons forced into excited states faster than natural decay. Re-excites electron levels beyond capacity; overflow radiates as coherent photons.
Void: Molecular dissociation — ionising breakdown of atomic bonds without energetic release. Erases the conditions that allow structure to persist. Information collapses.
Aetheric Constraints
Humans are biological gradient systems. Their bodies operate within narrow tolerances, maintained by electrochemical signalling, metabolic heat, and neural directionality. Because Arkhé is the state of absolute equilibrium (zero gradient), humans cannot safely interface with it directly. Instead, humans learn to act as Field Regulators. They apply directional pressure. By refining Aether into Phos or Skotos, the caster projects a Constraint Field around external matter.
Valkyr and Bul'ar Biology
Valkyrs are Humans who have forcibly decoupled themselves from the Aetherstream by stabilising an internal imbalance of Phos and Skotos. They are no longer fully biological, yet not fully Arkhé-native. When exposed to unconditioned Arkhé, Valkyrs suffer biological failure resulting in crystallisation rather than annihilation.
Bul’ar are pattern-first entities, whose organisation is encoded in Arkhé itself rather than maintained by fragile gradients. Their bodies are matter anchored to an energetic configuration. This is why Arkhé influx reinforces their identity instead of erasing it. They exist close to equilibrium, making them less alive in the biological sense, but vastly more persistent.
Regional Densities
Aether density is shaped by cosmic anchors. Yggdrasil and the Abandoned Throne act as cosmic sinks as free Arkhé relaxes towards them. This results in extreme Aether density and low coherence.
Néant is Skotos-dominant, shaped by Höðr's influence. Here, Aether flows preferentially toward separation, decay, and expenditure. Florencia represents maximal cohesive conditioning, where Aether flows toward repair, growth, and persistence. Jert’fia lies closer to Stillness than anywhere else in the world; here, biological gradients collapse and humans cannot survive unassisted.
Aetheric Mania
Aetheric Mania is a state of acute mental and energetic instability. Phos mania results in Radiant Delusion, a surge of arrogance and a delusional sense of invincibility. Skotos Mania results in Abyssal Nihilism, a ruthless drive to expend all energy at once. Regardless of the type, the result is almost always the individual burning up their bodies.
